El Jem's amphitheatre once seated 35,000 people in a town whose modern population is barely twice that. The stone came from quarries near Sullecthum, hauled inland by ox cart across the olive plains of the Sahel.
Rome built it around 238 AD, at the height of an olive-oil economy that made Thysdrus one of the wealthiest cities in Roman Africa. Kairouan, founded in 670 AD by Uqba ibn Nafi, answered from a different century entirely: the first Arab-Muslim city in the Maghreb, and for a time its intellectual capital. At El Jem, the arcades still rise three storeys, and the underground passages where animals and combatants waited beneath the arena floor remain walkable.
